ASI Pillars of Learning

These ideas are infused into each course and form the foundation of our learning community of scientific thinkers. ASI graduates can:
Observe and Question
  • I can recognize my own personal bias, preconceived notions, or prejudices that could influence my observations.
  • I can use all of my senses when making observations and refrain from judgement in my recordings of  those observations.
  • I can observe trends or patterns in my observations, and generate researchable questions, testable hypotheses, or conjectures based upon those trends or patterns.
  • I can record my observations using detailed drawings or photographic images in conjunction with highly descriptive language.
Research and Problem Solve
  • I can design a repeatable, ordered investigation or experiment with appropriate variables and controls intended to prove or disprove a testable hypothesis.
  • I can evaluate a source for bias or misinformation, and select appropriate, relevant sources while conducting research.
  • I can problem solve based upon research from credible sources with limited bias.
  • I can assess options and plan actions based upon an evaluation of previous approaches and/or potential consequences.

Analyze and Innovate
  • I can recognize flaws in my data or research and can include those flaws in my analysis.
  • I can analyze different data sets, identify trends, and draw conclusions or inferences based upon those observations.
  • I can be methodical in the analysis of research so that connections between what was learned and how the information was acquired is clearly communicated.
  • I can use the results of experimentation or research to develop an innovative solution to an observable problem.
Apply and Communicate
  • I can develop the materials needed to share research or solution(s) that includes an intentional use of media, language, strategies, and/or technologies that are appropriate to the intended audience.
  • I can adjust plans or an experimental design by applying an understanding of results or conclusions from previous experimentation or research.
  • I can take learned concepts/facts/ideas and apply them to a new situation or problem.
  • I can make predictions based upon results or conclusions from previous experimentation or research.
